Saturday in the City.

9-4-16 SHORT HILLS: The hurricane that hit Florida gave us a pass, and today, which was supposed to be rainy and windy, was actually sunny and pleasant. I got outside and planted two Caryopteris Bluebeard ‘Dark Knight’ near the stump of the ash tree that came down last year. It’s one of the few spots in the yard with decent sun. I also did some pruning and weeding.

Yesterday we were in the city to see Anna and Gardner’s new apartment in the village. We brought lunch from the Millburn Deli and Judy’s chocolate chip cookies. There was enough for Alison, Dan, Valerie, Lily and Sam. Dessert required a trip to the Big Gay Ice Cream Store a few blocks away. There was an Alec Baldwin sighting on the walk.

After lunch, we drove Lily and Sam uptown to see her new digs, and then we, and Val, went to Brooklyn Heights to her place and had a visit to the parks at the Heights waterfront.

If anyone is unaware, the city has converted six old warehouses to public parks extending from the Brooklyn Bridge to Atlantic Avenue, about a mile. The project is almost complete and is a huge hit with throngs of people using the facilities. There are gardens and wild green areas, kid playgrounds, a marina, lots of athletic facilities and water activities, runners, bikers and strollers. It was all backlit by a sunset behind Ellis Island and the Statue. At dusk we ate at the Shake Shack near Barge Music and the River Café. The night views are pretty good too.

Sunset from the piers with Ellis Island below the sun and the statue is off to the left.

Sailing on the East River...

Soccer fields....

Fishing, with sinks for cleaning your catch...

With a view of lower Manhattan...

...or the East River bridges from the marina....

Cookout by the marina...

and jump rope....

kayaking....

At sunset the lights go on at the b'ball courts.

After the Shake Shack, the night view was pretty good too.
